The Tempest

The Tempest

The Festival Players Theatre Company

Keay Theatre

The Tempest has been the subject of debate for many years, some believing it to be Shakespeare’s last play while others think this magical work was penned by an unknown writer. Doubters would quickly change their minds if they witnessed this marvellous performance by The Festival Players – an all male cast who performed with style, wit and aplomb, exactly as Shakespeare’s fans like it.

Celebrating 25 years as a touring company their professionalism is enduring and endearing; greeting the audience by selling programmes, collecting tickets and wishing us an enjoyable evening is an intimate way to begin any performance.

With a minimal, but cleverly designed set, rapid costume changes and beautiful original music composed by Festival stalwart Johnny Coppin, this travelling troupe epitomise the nomadic players of Shakespeare’s day.

A complex and dramatic piece, The Tempest is also high comedy filled with an ethereal mysticism which the tight cast revelled in. Superbly directed by Michael Dyer, who also takes on the mantle of Prospero the rightful Duke of Milan; the Tempest rattles along with Lane Paul Stewart, Martin Tomms and Christopher Mark adeptly playing up to 3 characters each, while Giles Oakley regally portrays the King of Naples. Peter Scott makes his professional debut with The Tempest and plays a seaman alongside a delightful Miranda, but truly comes into his own as the cheeky sprite, Ariel.

Unexpected surprises include a living table and a lovely scene involving a trio of shimmering Venetian-masked goddesses. Cornwall has been blessed this summer with a number of Shakespearian adaptations touring the County and a big thanks to the Keay for adding the wonderful Festival Players to our itinerary.
