The Dancer and the Devil. Rogue Theatre

Rogue’s eagerly anticipated latest production draws us deep into a mystical and mysteriously macabre world, a dark yet fabulously glitzy world, a place of secrets and lust, of circus and burlesque, of magic and suspense, of dreams and nightmares. Who can refuse Laverna’s invitation to enter this sinister world and meet the sad, raggle taggle misfits that inhabit The Lounge Limbo?

Is Jacob merely a glorious Master of Ceremonies or the Devil in disguise or both or neither? And the women who are caught in his spell, are they as innocent as they appear? Having run from the killing fields of the holocaust, they have become sexual exhibitionists, murderers and night club performers beyond their wildest imaginings.

Brilliantly written by Anna Maria Murphy, this darkly delicious tale is filled with unexpected twists and turns, shifting seamlessly from poignant and heartbreaking to hilariously funny. The superb cast revel in their work and all give exceptional performances. The set is delightfully shabby chic and cleverly designed to hide and then reveal jaw dropping and surprising secrets.

Music continues to be an integral part of Rogue’s theatrical experience and Musical Director Julian Gaskell’s musicianship is a tour de force throughout; working alongside Lauren Vandike to add something very special to the mix.

Angelina Boscarelli and Ollie Oakenshield should be very proud of The Dancer and the Devil as they fearlessly continue to push the boundaries of modern theatre.
