O-region Presents - One Darke Night

Using a varied selection of playwright Nick Darke’s work, interspersing each scene with extracts of Nick’s private journals and evocative film footage of Nick himself, O-region filled the Festival theatre with laughter and love.

Working closely with Nick’s widow, Jane Darke, the company has chosen to re-visit not only the celebrated Cornishman’s most popular work, but also some of his lesser-known writing. It is testament to the high calibre of the actors involved that each extract from 8 very different plays left us wanting more; impossible to single out one performer when all 5 played their many parts so perfectly. Moving easily from the fast and clever ‘Jack or Nantz’ scene from The King Of Prussia to the sharply observed American couple discussing the passing of their pet in ‘The Dead Monkey’, the acting was finely honed with superb timing and delivery in every scene. The extracts presented were completely different pieces, yet all bore the stamp of Nick Darke – his love of words, his keen observation of people, of politics, of life itself.

O-region have carved themselves a niche in Cornish film and theatre; sponsorship by Feast, The Works and Keap has allowed them to produce and tour One Darke Night and we must applaud the funders’ support in keeping Nick Darke’s work very much alive, continuing to bring him to new audiences and generations. The show is a rich and glorious reminder of Nick Darke’s work and is brought to us by some of Cornwall’s finest.
