Murray Lachlan Young

Liskerritt Community Centre

A strange venue, I thought, to host a night of stand-up anarchic poetry with the engaging Murray Lachlan Young. Would people in Liskeard have heard of the darling of 6 Music and Radio 4, let alone turn out on a misty February Wednesday to hear Murray’s thoughts on beardy men and Goths? Happily, my worries were unfounded, indeed the fans flocking to Liskerett’s Community Centre held up the start of the show while more chairs were brought in from who knows where?

Finally, with not an inch of space to squeeze another punter in, the doors were firmly closed and Murray began a 2 hour poetic ride through life as he observes it. Murray is a fabulous talent – describing him as a poet is like saying Monet liked to paint the odd picture. Murray held the audience in the palm of his hand with comedic poetry that we could all relate to, raising topics as wide ranging as thongs and Boris Johnson. No subject is off limits in Murray’s world as he pays homage Tae A Scrotum (in Scottish dialect) and persuaded us all to sing along to the charming classic ‘A Dogging I Will Go’. Community singing was also mandatory as we attempted, but failed, to discover the true meaning behind the lyrics of ‘I Am The Walrus’.

Two hours in the company of this comedic giant simply flew by - a superb evening spent with a clever, funny man who oozes warmth and wit. Murray is 6 Music’s Poet in Residence (and rightly so) and is also a regular contributor to Radio 4’s Saturday Live. The album, Murray Lachlan Young Live, is available to buy on CD from his website:  www.murraylachlanyoung.co.uk
