Keay Theatre
From the orchestra’s opening bars of this fabulous production, the audience is instantly transported back to the heady days of Broadway following the Wall Street crash. All the big hitters have been hit big and everyone involved in theatre is living on the breadline, they just need one brilliant show to get the money rolling in and their names in lights once more. Luckily, renowned writers, Bert Barry and Maggie Jones have written the perfect script for hard nosed Producer Julian Marsh to take to the road. The rest, as they say, is history as the company tours out of town before heading back to New York and lighting up Broadway. Along the way are tears, tantrums, love stories and weddings and, of course, a very happy ending.
The whole cast of 42nd Street gel beautifully, with outstanding performances by Kim Rowe as Julian Marsh, Camilla Soper playing shy Peggy Sawyer and transforming into a Broadway superstar, Stephanie Housman as writer Maggie Jones, Karen Mitchell as aging leading lady Dorothy Brock, Julie Emmett as Annie who befriends and helps Peggy Sawyer and Alex Piper being the love interest for Peggy. The supporting cast chorus are fantastic, helped along by Maureen Pascoe’s superb choreography, divine music led by Anna Minear, clever lighting and perfect Art Deco set design by Andy Martin and sound control by James Clarke. Did I mention costume to die for? Simply stunning.Director Diane Collings can feel justifiably proud of this fabulous, feel good show.
